Halloween in Hawaii

Halloween in Laie, and especially on Moana Street, is always a highlight of the year. For the whole month of October, the Polynesian Cultural Center hosts the wildly popular Haunted Lagoon. People come from all over the island and pay $25 each to wait in line for about two hours, then go on the 45-minute canoe ride. In the meantime, those of us who live in Laie get to hear the sounds of the Haunted Lagoon all month. On Halloween night, kids from all over the area descend on Moana Street. This year, we gave out candy to more than 1,000 Trick or Treaters. We bought enough candy for 780, then ran out with about an hour left. Fortunately, some friends of ours who used to live on Moana Street had a huge bag left over and came to our rescue so that we could keep handing out candy, and so that Lennie could keep playing the organ (see below). We should get the Guinness Book of World Records over here. I'll bet we get more Trick or Treaters on Moana St. than anywhere in the world.

We finally did it. Ever since we bought our digital piano with an organ setting, Lennie thought it would be cool to take the piano/organ out to the garage, where he could play scary music for the Trick or Treaters. One problem was that he didn't have very much scary music. Fortunately, Heather bought him a song book entitled, "Halloween Spooktacular", filled with "37 Gravest Hits". She also bought a shortened and edited version of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, the famous Dracula song. For 2 1/2 hours, Lennie joyfully played such pieces as Bach's Toccata and Fugue, Theme from Dracula, The Fog, Funeral March by Chopin, Funeral March of a Marionette by Gounod (the Alfred Hitchcock theme song), The Mummy, Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Tales from the Crypt, This is Halloween, Tubular Bells from the Exorcist, and the Twilight Zone theme music. They were all fun, but the Toccata and Fugue was definitely the signature piece.

What is this, you ask? This is Lennie and his organ behind a sheer sheet. We tried to give it a mysterious look, but the sheet probably wasn't quite sheer enough. We'll have to perfect Dracula's Lair next year.

Gandia, Spain- family reunion!!!

Surprisingly, the beach there was very nice. And we thought there could be no good beach outside of Hawaii! We had two good afternoons at the beach, the second day with just Noah. We had such fun with him!

Noah's beloved blanket, turned into do-rag- compliments of Daddy! This is outside of the Lladro factory where we bought a rather large statue of the Christus, but we did manage to get it home safe and sound.

As Paul remarked, "Sean had more clothes on than anyone else at the beach". That's not saying too much, since many of the women were topless!

Robyn and Paul fixed a Spanish feast for us our first night there. The best food we had in Spain!

My personal favorite touristy thing in Barcelona was Goudi's Sacrada Familia. The Cathedral was surprisingly beautiful inside and is almost finished! It is designed to look like a forest inside. the outside has many detailed images such as the nativity, healings, etc.

We tried to enter the Madrid temple, but it was closed for cleaning, so we just saw the outside and the MTC. We even took a picture of Brian's picture when he was there! The grounds are very peaceful.

The Huff's Summer Extravaganza

We definitely had a summer to remember! The bad thing is that we did so many things and went so many places, that I am already forgetting! I thought I would post a few highlights of each location so I'll start with Boston. Lennie had to attend a seminar at Harvard Business School, his Alma Mater, so we happily began our trip there (after our short layover in Denver where we got to have a nice, short visit with Heather, Doug and Caitlin). It was great to stay with his college roomie, Kerry Hopkins, and to see our first apartment, etc. It was a great way to begin our trip- going back in time to basically "where it really all began for the Huffs".

Yup, it finally happened. I finished my Master's degree on Saturday. No more waking up at 4 am to work on assignments or read articles! I now have a master's degree from the American College of Education in Chicago. Since I would rather be in Europe than Chicago the end of June, I just threw on Lennie's graduation robe and we had a quiet celebration. We were so busy that we didn't have time to properly celebrate. Vacation is coming up, so that will work just fine. I"m glad I did it, but also glad it's behind me now.

What a way to celebrate Mother's Day!! Does this remind you of anything? This is what it looked like at about 1:00 p.m. this afternoon. We spent our afternoon digging ditches, hauling sandbags and doing everything we could to keep water from our house. Fortunately, the rain lightened up in the middle of the afternoon, so hopefully we won't get flooded again.
We have some ladies staying with us this week who sing in a Sweet Adelines Barbershop Show Chorus. When they saw this scene they said, "Let's get a boat and sail on Lake Huff!" Of course, they didn't realize that scenes like this make us paranoid.

35 Years!!!

On Saturday, May 7, we celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary. It's hard to believe that it's been 35 years, but Adam is 33 and Robyn is 31, so it makes sense that we would have been married for 35 years. The above picture was taken just last Sunday, May 1. Not bad, but we definitely don't look like we're 23 and 21 anymore. To add a little nostalgia, we're sharing some pictures from our wedding day, as well as three pictures from before our wedding. It's been a great 35 years. We've had our ups and downs, but we've had some great adventures, we've got five great children, three sons and daughters-in-law and five grandchildren, with more on the way. And, we're still in love.

Hike to Kaena Point

After weeks of working on Saturday, Bonnie and I finally had some free time on March 12 to spend an entire day away from Laie. After a few hours of shopping, we decided to hike to Kaena Point from the Leeward side. What a wonderful hike it was. We started late afternoon when it was pretty hot since the sun was in the West where we were hiking. But it got cooler as the sun got lower. As you can see, we saw beautiful waves with the sun shining through them, whales off Kaena Point, albatrosses in flight, and most fascinating of all, albatrosses going through their mating rituals. We enjoyed everything for so long that we barely got back to our car before it was dark.

On President's Day, we took a few hours off from our busy schedule to go hiking to Kahaluu Falls with Nancy and Mike Bliss. Nancy's sister and her husband also came. It's great to have both beautiful beaches and beautiful mountains so close.

A few months ago someone stole the bike that Catherine gave Bonnie and that Doug so lovingly restored. Bonnie really wanted a bike that she could ride to work on about once a week, so for her birthday, we bought her a new bike - a Townie - which is really sturdy and comfortable, yet has seven speeds and is just fast enough. Happy Birthday, Bonnie!

Sunset Beach Elementary Art Sale

On Friday, February 25, Bonnie's school, Sunset Beach Elementary, held an art sale. We bought the colorful picture above, which was painted by Teryl Soren, a member of our ward. Toward the end of the night, they auctioned off the most valuable of the paintings. After the auction, John Cruz, a fairly popular singer in Hawaii, performed. Oh, and he invited a friend of his, someone whose child attends Sunset Beach Elementary. The friend, shown on top, is Jack Johnson, a popular singer who grew up in Sunset Beach and still makes his home there.

Sacred Falls

I have been wanting to hike up to Sacred Falls for several years now, but couldn't find anyone who was willing to be "illegal" with me. Dolly Wright was staying with us for a couple of weeks and also was really wanting to go, so we ventured out. It was even more beautiful than I remembered from over 10 years ago. The trail is still in great shape. These pictures don't do it justice. We will have to go back with our new camera. It truly lives up to its name. It's so lush and green, with carved out mountain alcoves, beautiful waterfall pool, and spired formations behind the falls that you can't see in these pictures. Lucky we live Hawaii!! (And lucky no boulders fell on us).

Okay, so we didn't get to have the traditional Thanksgiving with friends and family. We had to settle for snorkeling at Captain Cook's monument and having grilled burgers on the boat. This was the most unusual Thanksgiving ever, but we are indeed thankful for sooooo many things. Thanks for being you and for all you mean to us. We are also grateful that we live in a beautiful place that you all want to visit!!! Lucky we don't live in North Dakota!

Halloween in Laie

Here are scenes from Halloween. Sunset Beach Elementary had a big Halloween costume parade. Aren't they cute? On Moana St., we may have had the biggest Halloween we have ever had. We're guessing that about 1,000 Trick or Treaters came to our house. We gave out about 800 pieces of candy and ran out by 8:00 p.m. when it was still going strong. We think maybe it was because kids from some areas like Sunset Beach and Kaaawa descended on Laie, since it was the only game in town on Saturday night. The rest of the island probably Trick or Treated on Sunday night. It was crazy, but fun.
By the way, we're showing three pictures of our pumpkin. Bonnie wanted me to carve a beautiful tree branch with small holes for leaves. Instead, I carved the whole tree, which let in too much light and showed all of the Christmas tree lights that were inside the pumpkin. So, I tried it again by carving a tree branch on the side of the same pumpkin. We thought it looked pretty weird, but lots of people complemented us on our great, intricate art work.

Dad the Model

One of Dad's students talked him into being a model for his photography class. He was gone for EVER! The students then had their photos on display in the lobby of the auditorium, just in time for the big Ohana meeting for all the faculty at the beginning of the year. The student titled this "Justice and Mercy". If you ask me, it's waaayyy more justice than mercy! What do you think?

Bike Path Groundbreaking

Bonnie and I rode out bikes to Gunstock Ranch on Saturday to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for a new bike path that will run from Laie to Kahuku. It is the first small step in what is called "Envision Laie", a plan to increase the size of BYU-Hawaii and the Polynesian Cultural Center. It was fun and funky: local Hawaiian style. Since we are an LDS community,
the only thing that was missing was the ti leaves and water.

It's hard to believe, but Allison has gone off to BYU. It seems like only yesterday that she was our cute little princess, our "royalty spoilty", who was constantly doted over by her brothers and sisters. Then they all left and she has basically been an only child at home for the last eight years. Bonnie and I are now empty nesters, and Allison is off to new adventures. She has looked forward to this for a long time. We pray that all will go well.

Hike to Laie Summit

Friday was a state holiday in Hawaii, so we went on a hike to Laie Summit. We have lived in Laie for ten years, but Bonnie and Allison have never hiked to the summit, and I had only hiked there once. I thought it would be a great most-of-the-day, discover something new, feeling of accomplishment type of hike. Besides, as you can see from these pictures, it was a gorgeous day in Hawaii. In this first picture, Bonnie and Allison are picking strawberry guavas.

This is the "Hills Are Alive" part of the Laie Falls hike. There is always a breeze and a great view of both the mountains, the ocean and Laie. Somehow it reminds us of the scene in the Sound of Music where Julie Andrews bursts out into "The Hills Are Alive With the Sound of Music"

It was a great hike. When we finished, we went home, took a shower, then went to Turtle Bay Resort, where we watched a presentation by a chef, relaxed in hammocks, then ate a wonderful dinner at Ola while listening to Hawaiian music and watching the sunset. Hawaii can be tough, but somebody has to live here.

Hau'ula Loop Trail Hike

Last Wednesday, Allison and I hiked the Hau'ula Loop Trail, one of our family's favorite short hikes. Here are some pictures from the hike. This first picture is in the middle of the deep, dark forest part of the trail.

This is one of the few places on the Hau'ula Loop trail that opens up and gives a view. Most of the trail is in the woods, with a somewhat mysterious feel.

Tree roots like these are typical on Hawaii mountain trails.

Thickets of trees are common on the way down the trail. When they are in season, this would be a great place to pick orange lilikoi (passion fruit). Unfortunately, we didn't see any on this day.

Elephant Seal. This was perhaps the nicest surprise of the day. This beach was full of elephant seals who entertained us for about an hour.

These pictures are pretty much in reverse order. After going to Cat and Boo's church, we spent a sunny Sunday driving down Highway 1: the Pacific Coast Highway, one of the most famous and beautiful drives in the country. Highlights were the Big Sur country, the elephant seals, a quick glimpse of Hearst's Castle and Santa Barbara. I'll see if I can upload a video of the elephant seals. They are really interesting animals. Apparently, they only migrate to this particular beach, at least in California.

` Here are scenes from our two-day visit to Monterey to see our niece, Catherine (Cat), her husband, Boo, and their daughter, Hajin.
One of the highlights of our trip to Monterey was riding our bikes on the 17-mile road around the Monterey Peninsula, something we did on our honeymoon 34 years ago. Here are scenes from Pebble Beach Golf Club, one of the meccas of golf.

First Two Days in Los Angeles

Checking out the merchandise in L.A.'s fashion district. This area of L.A. feels like Mexico, the Philippines or most any country in Asia, Latin America, etc. Bonnie and Heather were especially on the lookout for fabric, much to Lennie's delight.

We attended the Los Angeles Temple. Doug and Heather's apartment was so close to the temple that you could see the Angel Moroni from their front yard.

The first night we were there, we watched Smokey Robinson perform at the Hollywood Bowl. For a 70-year old, he is still fun to watch.

These are highlights from our first two days in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, we have no pictures for perhaps our most memorable highlight. Bonnie and I stayed in a bed and breakfast about one block from the south part of Beverly Hills. On our first morning, we got up and went for a walk, with the idea of walking to the area where the celebrities' houses are in Beverly Hills. On our way, a man and his dog were blocking the sidewalk. The man was reading the newspaper on one side, the dog was sniffing around on the other side and the leash was suspended across the sidewalk. Bonnie walked up to the man and said, with a bit of an attitude, "Excuuuuuse me!!!" The man looked up from his paper and said, "Oh, I'm so sorry", just as I approached him. His voice sounded very familiar. When I took a closer look, he looked a lot like Neil Diamond. I went up to Bonnie and said, "Do you realize that the guy you were just rude to is Neil Diamond?" She looked back and said, "No, he's too old and too skinny!" We walked up to the corner then turned right. We soon decided we were going in the wrong direction, so we turned back to the corner. By that time, "Neil Diamond" and his dog were at the corner. I told Bonnie that she should ask him if he is Neil Diamond. If he says yes, tell him, "Do you realize that you helped me deliver my third baby?" (That's a long story). She said that she didn't want to bother him, so we just walked on. We later told our Neil Diamond story to Heather, Doug, Cat and Boo who really didn't believe that he could be Neil Diamond. I don't think Bonnie fully believed it either, so I suggested that we Google "Neil Diamond" to get a recent picture of him. Bonnie looked at some pictures and thought it could have been Neil Diamond, but still wasn't 100% sure, so I suggested that we Google "Neil Diamond's Dog". Sure enough, there was a picture of Neil Diamond's dog and there was no question that it was the very dog that we saw on the sidewalk. That was our rather intimate, accidental encounter with a celebrity.

The world-famous Driftwood Inn. Lennie got in big trouble for reserving this place. It ranked as the #2 most popular hotel in Homer by Trip Advisor. There must be a lot of people even cheaper than us who stay in Homer. It was like staying in an old ship.

Here are pictures from our last three days in Alaska: all on the Kenai Peninsula. Bonnie and I had some time to ourselves for about 3 1/2 days, and were then joined by everyone else for the last two. The Kenai Peninsula has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth, yet it is only 2-4 hours away from Anchorage.

Day cruises through Prince William Sound and Kenai Fjords National Park

We took two day cruises to see glaciers. The first was with Allison through the Prince William Sound, which is a 1 1/2 hour drive from Anchorage. It was cloudy and cold, but never did rain on that trip. The highlights were riding by a salmon hatchery where there were about 100 bald eagles flying and nesting in the trees, and getting right up to a tidal glacier. We finished that day with a great hike near the town of Whittier.

The second cruise through the Kenai Fjords National Park was supposed to be even more fantastic. Unfortunately, shortly after we started a major storm came into the area. Because we were out on the open sea, lots of passengers (fortunately, Bonnie wasn't one of them) got seasick and we had to turn back before we were even half-way to our major destination: a huge tidal glacier. However, on our way back we saw two different humpack whales breach right out of the water. The second came so close that the boat captain thought he might have to back up the boat so the whale wouldn't run into us.

Family in Alaska

We had some great highlights in Alaska, but the best part was being with our kids and grandkids. We enjoyed meeting Owen for the first time, reading and playing with Chloe, taking Sophie (the dog) for walks, going to the zoo and enjoying the mountains of Alaska together.

North Pole and Fairbanks

After Denali, we headed even further north to Fairbanks and North Pole, Alaska. Andrea was especially thrilled to visit North Pole, where we saw the "real" Santa and visited his house. In Fairbanks, we went to a free park called Pioneer Park, where we strolled through old buildings, rode a train, visited an aerospace museum, and rode buckin' Salmon.

Denali National Park

During our first week in Alaska, we all packed into Adam and Andrea's minivan and drove up to Denali National Park. Denali is the native Alaskan's name for Mount McKinley. As you can see, we got excellent views of Mount McKinley on our drive up before we got to the National Pak. On our one full day in the park, we took a nine-hour bus ride on a school bus. We had a very entertaining bus driver who gave us lots of time to stop and see animals such as eagles, mountain sheep, bears, caribou, and moose. However, we never did see Mount McKinley on that ride and it was a long ride for a baby and a toddler. All in all, it was a spectacular, but long day. For Bonnie, Allison and I, it ended well. We went to one of the best restaurants we have been to in years: 229 Parks, which is about five miles south of the entrance to Denali National Park. We were then going to take care of Chloe and Owen while Adam and Andrea went to the restaurant, but we were too late. They'll have to try it later.

Into the Wild!

One of our favorite experiences in Alaska was hiking up to the Harding Icefield close to Seward Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula. The last part of the hike was all through snow and it was steep, but definitely worth it. The icefield is huge! It's vastness was quite humbling. We hiked up with a young couple who were not wanting to see bears, so they made lots of noise and no bears were spotted!

One of our Alaska highlights was waiting for this bear to come down to the river to catch a couple of salmon. We were at the Russian River falls and met a fish and wildlife worker (he counts the salmon...all 134,000 of them) who told us this bear comes down several times a day to catch fish in this spot. It is always the same bear. It really made our day and was worth waiting for!

Winding Down

The school year is winding down for us; I only have 1 week of school left and Mom has 3. Everything's coming to an end and summer is finally in sight! Earlier this week I had my last Vocal Motion concert, and it was a great concert to end on. Luckily we performed for 2 nights, because the Hawaiian section in our first concert was kind of a disaster :P

The seniors were recognized and we gave each other leis; an old tradition.

The tennis season also ended a few weeks ago. I didn't make it to states because I had to play the 3rd seeded girl in the round of 16 in the qualifying tournament. It was a fun season though and I won a lot more matches than last year.

Mom also managed to win her school $5,000 by organizing a program where 50 families cut back on their energy from last year. Her school won the contest not only for the district, but for the whole state!

Sunset Beach had their first art auction fundraiser. It was held at Waimea Falls park and seemed to be a huge success. They had a silent auction as well as a real auction for the bigger items (like a ukelely signed by Jack Johnson). They sold alcohol, so I was definitely surrounded by people I wouldn't usually hang out with. It was great people watching territory. They had so many people come they had to turn some away!

Our principal on her retirment day. I somehow got stuck with planning the surprise events for her. She has been at the school for 10 years and I worked fairly closely with her, so it's going to be strange to have her gone tomorrow.

I know there is absolutely no way to prove this, but this really is a picture of Jack Johnson playing a couple of songs for the art auction. Jake Shimibukoro played as well, but it was so late when he started, that I didn't get to hear him.

This morning we all woke up to the beuatiful sound of high pitched emergency sirens at 6:00 sharp. We turned on the TV to find that the earthquake that hit Chile the night before was expected to send a tsunami to Hawaii around 11:00 am. All the news reporters were making it sound like a majorWith thoughts of last year's flood in our minds, we spent the morning raising all of our furniture onto cinder blocks and throwing together sandwhiches and fruit for lunch; and for some reason, Mom felt that it was absolutely necessary to bake a batch of bread even though we only had a couple hours left. I guess she was thinking ahead to when our power would be out for days. Anyway we evacuated our house and joined the rest of Laie for a big picnic party on top of the hill behind the temple, complete with loud music, and plenty of talking. It looked like we were all gathered on the hill to watch fireworks on the Fourth of July; everyone was looking at the shore through binoculars waiting for the big attraction that never actually came. You've gotta love Laie :)

Halloween is always a big deal in Laie, especially on our street where hundreds of kids of all ages go trick-or-treating. I didn't have a costume, so I decided to use my old Hogwarts robe from a few years ago, and added some accessories to be Luna Lovegood. I even made my own spectraspecs glasses using a template I found on the internet. They looked just like the ones in the movie! I think it turned out to be a pretty awesome costume- someone even asked to take a picture with me :)

Hiking Club!

We finally had our first hike for the school Hiking Club which me and Alayna put together. It was a lot of fun, we went to Turtle Creek. A couple of dogs even hiked with us all the way, and one of them almost got run over on the highway because he was chasing after us when we were driving home. We had to pull over and take him back to his house. I guess he jost got really attached in the two hours we spent together.

It was unusually cool this summer in the Rochester area. We didn't usually mind that, though. Can you imagine how hot it would have been in our heavy costumes if it was hot and humid? We did have one night when the pageant had to end mid-way due to heavy lightning.

Well, here we are several months later, finally getting around to updating our blog. We have way too many photos to include here, but here is something to whet your appetite. We really had a fantastic experience and I couldn't possibly explain all the spiritual experiences we had. We had moments of shear exhaustion, but loved meeting the interesting people, reliving the scenes from the Book of Mormon, giving, serving, and having lots and lots of devotionals.

An outside view of the castle. We had Noah with us, so poor grandpa was the workhorse, carrying him on his back in the pack all day. It was a very entertaining castle for all of us.

We did the "ten-minute" tour of Stratford. Basically we just walked around and saw things like the outside of the Shakespeare museum, etc. It's a picturesque town on a nice river with cool looking buildings. That's about all I can tell you.

We prefer the tan and brown to the fakey black and white that you see in the above picture.

Day Two in the Cotswolds

The Cotswolds is an agricultural area that used to be the "wool" district. Now it is a place people love to visit because the villages are well preserved and the farms are so picturesque. We went on two long Cotswold walks, the last of which was about 7 miles and we went to 3 villages.

This is the lovely, quant village of Snowshill.

We stayed overnight on the spur of the moment in this B and B. This is the back yard. We just weren't quite ready to leave the area after our day at the farm and the playground.

We were walking through a field when we had this scary cow encounter. We had this huge herd of cows running toward us and we didn't quite know what to do. Luckily, we discovered that cows are mostly just curious, and not aggressive!

We planned to stay in the Cotswolds for one day, but we found this fabulous farm and spent a lot of time just at the farm. Noah just loved it! This is a picture of a really hairy cow. This farm has a lot of rare breeds of animals. They also had a lot of fun things for kids, like the scooters below.

They also had great petting areas where the kids could actually get right in with the bunnies, piglets, etc. He had a great time and we actually enjoyed it as well.

After about 20 hours of traveling, we finally arrived! Even though we were majorly jet lagged, we stopped of at Oxford. This is part of the Oxford campus.

Flood, Faith and Favors

I know this is from, like, 5 months ago, but here it is. We kind of forgot about it, and Dad finally remembered to email it to himself from his work computer so we could post it. This is a picture of President Eyring when he came to see the damage from the flood in December. It was a really cool experience to have President Eyring and all his body guards, or whatever they were, come to our house and talk to us. We could feel the spirit, and he even said something like, "You have a very sweet spirit in your home. I'm glad I had the opportunity to meet you." Mom said to him (and the others who visited) "Sure come on in. At least we have an excuse for our house being messy!" It almost made the flood worth it (at least for that day).

Today was a crazy day; in the morning I played in the OIA individual tennis tournament, and then I rushed over to my Vocal Motion Heritage Festival competition. I was supposed to start my match at 8 am, but the school of the girl I was playing against was late, so they put other people on the courts first! So I didn't start playing until around 8:50 or something. Then my match took around 2 hours which is a lot longer than usual, partly because my opponent took so long in between serves and switches, and she bounced the ball like, 20 times before every serve; oh yeah, we had a lot of long rallies, and the score was pretty close too. But I lost. Anyway, by then it was like, 11:00, so I just had time to take a shower before rushing off to Windward Community College for our vocal motion competition. We did okay, but it wasn't our best, and something was wrong with the CD. Halfway through one of our songs it skipped to the next song, and we had to stand there and smile for a few minutes while they figured it out. But we still got Gold despite all of that :) It was a pretty good day, but I'm just glad this crazy week is over!

We had a fabulous ski trip north of Eden Utah. It was warm, sunny, and beautiful. To make things even better, we ran into a family zip lining. They were so generous and let us zip line with us. They had all of the necessary equipment and knowledge. We had to climb the tree and onto a high 3x2 platform to hook onto the zipline and jump. (It wasn't until I was half-way up the tree that I remembered I was afraid of heights-Heather). We enjoyed visiting with this nice family. On our way back, we enjoyed some glorious scenery. What a nice way to spend time together! Note that the top picture looks black and white, but it was naturally colored and stunning that way.

We Got a Rabbit!

Well, we finally replaced our two flooded and totalled cars. We got something that can sort of be a combination between my Miata and our VW Passat. So....we got a Rabbit. It's small and easy to park, but we can still fit 5 people and it has cargo space if we put the back seats down. We bought it "used"--it had 200 miles on it, so basically it is still brand new. We are excited not to have to look for cars anymore. It is a stick, so we are back to just us being able to drive it.

Back In Our House

After nearly seven weeks, and a whole lot of shopping

and work to get our house ready to live in again, we finally moved back

in on Friday, December 30. Here are some pictures that show the finished

product. Bonnie is especially proud of our new travertine tile floors and

the backsplash behind the oven in the kitchen. It was a heck of a way to get

new floors and a new kitchen, but we're pleased. There is still some work to do on

the house, and we still have boxes that need to get packed, a lawn that hasn't been

mowed for two months, and a garage that needs to be cleaned and organized, but

we'll be settled soon enough. In the end, our house will be better than ever, so all's well that ends well.

New Beginnings

Sean and I arrived in Hawaii just in time for the aftermath of the flood. Our family, along with thirteen other families on our street, had to evacuate their home for major restorative repairs. We also found that our Mom's mazda miata was totaled, and our VW passat was sitting in a shop. In short, our poor family was homeless and carless.

Sean and I are a benevolent sort and thought that we should lend a helping hand to our poor family. We immediately began the hunt for a temporary home and transportation.
We would have been happy with anything, but to our pleasant surprise our findings exceeded our expectations. We found some cozy quarters on beachfront property. We also found a large vehicle with great air conditioning and plenty of room for all of us. We have been so blessed this Christmas season.

This is a picture from a more sane, normal time. I was in charge of our school's tree for the Turtle Bay resort Festival of Trees (for Elementary Schools). Since our school is really into recycling and the environment, we did a "green" tree, with everything being made from recycled products. It was a new challenge for me, but I think it turned out quite well and those who helped with it had a good time.

Wet Winter

Well, it hasn't exactly been a great start to the holidays in Laie. It all started on Thursday morning when I woke up for seminary and looked out the front door. It was pouring and our driveway was totally flooded up to the porch, and our backyard and lanai were completely submerged; it was only about an inch from coming into the house. So I woke mom and dad up, and we started running around, panicking, calling people to get sandbags that didn't exist. Mom and dad finally decided it was best to get some cinder blocks to raise our furniture up, so they got in the kayak and paddled to someones house who had bricks we could borrow. (I think they actually ripped them out of the wall in the backyard) Lots of people came to help, since our house is the lowest spot on the street, and the first to flood. We got most of our furniture up and then the water started coming in through the doors and flooding the house. Pretty soon we had a foot of dirty, brown water in every room and we finally decided to evacuate. We couldn't open the door or else even more water would come in, so we had to climb through the window onto the driveway. The water was about two feet deep outside, so we got in our kayak and paddled to the other end of the street, which is higher, and wasn't flooded. We stayed at the Compton's house for a couple hours, and then the storms drains started working, and the water was gone within an hour! There probably wouldn't have been any problems if the drains had been working in the first place. So we went back to our house, and, with help from people who didn't get flooded, ripped out our carpets, swept out the water, and started cleaning. We're still nowhere near ready to move back into our house though, and neither are quite a few of our neighbors.
Then today, we were still working on the house and guess who showed up? President Eyring and his guides and security guards. I guess he wanted to see the damage, so we got to talk to him, and shake his hand, and show him inside our house, and take a picture with him. It was awesome!
We'll hopefully have some pics up soon, we took a lot, but we can't download them on this computer. (sorry heather, you'll probably be here before we can get pictures on our blog)

Halloween

Halloween in Laie is a huge deal. We passed out 200 0tter pops, and about 700 pieces of candy, and we still ran out! I dressed up as a world traveler, and dad stuck an old sheet over his head. I'm not exactly sure what he was supposed to be. Mom was the wolf who ate Little Red Riding Hood's grandma.

This past sunday I took my scriptures and camera to the orchard (one of my favorite spots). After a short nap in the warm indian summer sun, I thought I would capture the colors and light that was surrounding me. Here are a few images:

I also wanted to show an example of a project I am working on in sculpture (an animal in a representational-abstract form). It is an ethiopian wolf. They say that who you really are comes out in your artwork (you can tell a lot about a person by their art). I was surprised at what I learned by doing this little piece. Allison Drives At Last!

I finally got my permit on Wednesday, barely. You're allowed to get six wrong out of 30, and I missed 4. So yesterday I convinced mom to let me give it a try, and I actually did pretty good. I drove around the BYU parking lot about 25 times, and then I drove all the way home, it was awesome! Of course, I never got above 10 mph, but in Laie that's OK.

Our house is being invaded by creepy crawly things! We came home one night and there were a couple of tiny little frogs, or toads hopping around our kitchen floor. Then we looked in our sink and there was a slug leaving it's slime all over the place. What's going on?! And of course, we have humongous cockroaches and geckos, but those are normal. We have never seen frogs or slugs inside our house though! We think it must have something to do with our screens, so hopefully the problem will end when we get them fixed.

This is a picture Heather took of our wonderful sunsets. We do have fabulous lighting here and we like to be out at sunset time to take advantage of the wonder.
This is our new water feature! Instead of having Heather build me one (costly and time consuming) we found one we liked ready made on on a great sale. I love to sit on the lanai now! It's very relaxing and rejuvenating.
Heather's last task here was to help us transplant this big tree. It was quite a hassle to get the tree in the first place and cost more than I ever thought I would pay. It is a plumeria pudica and is supposed to have a lollipop look to it, with a profusion of white flowers up top. Well, it got a little overpruned and went into shock so we now call it our "faith" tree. We have faith that it will perk up and look beautiful one day.
This is the small version of the tree that I originally bought. It is doing well, but will take about 5 years or more to reach the height I was hoping for. Isn't landscaping fun?

Heather in Hawaii

We all have a list of things we need to see, do, or eat while in Hawaii. One thing on my list was to eat breadfruit. There's nothing quite like breadfruit baked with coconut milk and onions.

While walking behind the temple (the garden with the gazebo and cemetary) I noticed little breadfruit on the ground. I asked nearby gardeners if I could take them.

"What you gonna do with those?"

"eat them."

"O, Eat them! No, you can't eat those, you need some good breadfruit" He then gestured to some large ripe ones high in the tree. These two tongan gardeners found a long stick and with care poked down the best, ripest breadfruit.

The very next day, two went mushy. I baked one of the overripe ones with butter, brown sugar, and spices. It was pretty good. Then, that evening Alli and I baked the firm one with coconut milk, onions, and shrimp. I don't know what happened, but that breadfruit was overripe as well! We tried to down the slightly sweet and gooey starch, but succumbed to the garbage can. I think I have had my breadfruit fix (:

Heather's Graduation and Yellowstone

We got to go horseback riding when our B&B host saw us petting the horses. He was injured and couldn't do his usual work, so he was happy to show us around and let us ride.

We chased down the river after this beaver, and finally it came right up on the bank to eat some plants.

After the Canadian Rockies we got to watch Heather graduate. Well, walk anyway. She still has one part time semester left. After her graduation we went to Yellowstone for a couple nights, and Sean came too.

We forgot the name of this lake, but it was on our 11 mile hike. Doesn't it look like the silhouette of a dog or wolf?
We got to walk up this glacier a little ways.

This is one of the highest waterfalls in Canada. I think it's called Taketawa or something like that.
We got our own private viewing of a black bear with her two cubs. They were right on the side of the road when we drove past, and the cubs were playing with each other.

After Glacier, we went to Banff NP where we went hiking, and camped for 3 nights. It was really beautiful, with lakes, and huge mountains, and wildlife, and wildflowers; but it was really cold too. We had to wear coats and thermalsat night, and slept with 2 sleeping bags. When we went to Jasper, we got rained out, so instead of setting up our tent in the freezing rain and eating canned soup for dinner, we stayed in a bed and breakfast, slept in nice warm beds, and took hot showers. And of course, only a few minutes after we arrived at the bed and breakfast it stopped raining.

We saw a bigger variety of wildflowers than we've ever seen on a hike. And of course, dad took a picture of every single one of them.

This year we took a month long trip to the mainland. We flew to Utah and were there for a week and a half. I was at tennis camp for a week during that time, and almost died in 102 degree weather. It was pretty tough, playing tennis matches, doing drills, and conditioning(running and stairs) for 6 hours a day in the hot sun. But I survived and I met some nice people. Then we drove up to Rexburg to watch Heather's performance before heading up to Glacier NP. We were there for 3 days, then went to Banff NP and Jasper NP in Canada for a few days before driving back down to Rexburg for Heather's graduation. We helped her pack up and move out, and then we all (Mom, Dad, Heather, Allison, and Sean) went to Yellowstone for 2 days. Oh, we also got to go horseback riding when we stayed in a farmhouse bed and breakfast in Ashton, Idaho.

Chloe is also growing up! She has a distinct personality, as her mother refers to her as the "Drama Queen". Allison Gets a Job

So yesterday I started my first official job. It was the last job I expected to get, partly because I didn't know it existed. My friend Phoebe's mom found us a job at a farm in Kahuku. For now, we're spending two days a week putting stickers on plastic tomato boxes and bags. I know it doesn't sound too exciting, but it's a good first job. The boss is nice, I work a nice 6 hours a week, and the hours are flexible since we're in high school. And it's only for 6 weeks, since we're going to the mainland for the summer.

Well, now that the tennis season is over, I'm starting to think about what other things I could do. I might get a job and take drivers ed. Have any ideas of what else I could do to keep busy?

The tennis season was pretty unsuccesful and disappointing- the highest score I got was 4-6, 1-6. I was mostly playing against girls that have played for years and went to State Champs. But I did get a lot better, and maybe next year I'll actually win some matches.

Spring Break has finally come, and me and Mom are pretty excited about it. Two whole weeks off of school! I still have to wake up early though, to go to 7:00 tennis practice every morning. Today me and a couple others had to run 70 sets of lines to make up for 2 practices that we missed last week for our high school choir concert. Oh well, I'll live- the running actually wasn't too bad. Our choir concert with the Honolulu Symphony, BYU concert choir, and a couple childrens choirs was great. We sang "The Mass of the Children" which was about 60 pages long.

New Years in NYC!!!

The year 2008 began with a family reunion. It had been three years since our family all came together. This time, we had two little additions to our family, Noah and Chloe. Although we did get around NYC seeing and doing many things, our trip focused on spending time with the family and most importantly, our precious babies!!!
Sean and Allison in Brooklyn. We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, and then met up with Jenny and Scott. We took about a 1 hour walk to get to their apartment, because they had their dog, Lucky, with them, so we couldn't take the subway.

Our three days with Robyn, Paul, and Noah were wonderful. We were sad so see them go (you can't blame us!). Isn't Noah just the most adorable little baby you've ever seen?! I can't help watching the short video clip over and over again, I can't get enough of him.

When Noah was gone, we still got to dote over precious little, two week old Chloe Iris Huff. Isn't she sweet! It almost looks like she's smiling, she must like her Grandpa.

Andrea and Chloe just before Chloe was blessed in Sacrament meeting. Andrea's mom, Iris, hand sewed Chloe's blessing dress, and it turned out very nice. Mother and baby are doing well.

Hectic Holidays

Wow, these past couple weeks have been busy. Allison has had projects and finals (including an insane Algebra 2 final that will determine her semester grade), and Bonnie and Lennie have been cramming in the last things for work before Christmas break. Besides that, Allison has had tennis matches, band concerts, and piano recitals, Lennie is moving into a new office at work, and we're doing last minute chores around the house before we leave tomorrow night. Yep, we're all looking forward to a nice, relaxing Christmas break with nothing on our agenda except fun. And hopefully there will be snow, or else the trip to Utah isn't worth it (haha, jk).

Well, this is our first post on the Huff family blog. As you probably know, our family loves to travel, so we'll most likely be posting lots of pictures of our adventures. This is a picture of Bonnie, Allison and Heather playing "Sound of Music" in the Austrian Alps.
